Summer Research Opportunities

Summer research programs provide an opportunity to learn outside of the classroom, and take part in innovative research that benefits humanity. These opportunities can be local, at more distant research institutions, or even international. Being a contributor at renowned research labs can give you skills and knowledge that spark your interest to one day lead research teams of your own. If you have any opportunities you would like to share, please send an email to Kristy Kambanis at kristyk@uic.edu. Listed below are a few research opportunities to consider:

Student Research Participation (SRP) program at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) Heading link

The Student Research Participation (SRP) program encourages undergraduate students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research internships.

A student will spend the first week of his/her Argonne experience with an Argonne staff member devising a research strategy and attending mandatory safety classes. For the next few weeks, the supervisor will provide considerable program assistance and guidance to implement the research plan. Subsequently, the student will be required to give a poster presentation at the end of their appointment.

During the appointment period, participants receive a stipend of $650 per week and on-site housing. Dormitory type lodging is available on-site at no direct cost to the student. Students choosing to live in the on-site student housing are required to have a valid major credit card (MasterCard, Visa, or American Express only) when checking in. This will be used for the security deposit. In addition, your card will also be charged the first week of each month for the prior month’s charges. You will be reimbursed in your pay check.

Laney Graduate School's Summer Opportunity for Academic Research program Heading link

The LGS-SOAR Program, is a 10-week residential summer program where research fellows conduct full-time research and are mentored by their Faculty Mentor and teams of postdocs, research technicians, librarians, graduate students, and other undergraduates. SOAR scholars receive a housing award for residence on the Emory campus and a stipend to support their full-time attention to research training and professional development.
The program is unique in that all scholars will be from historically underrepresented ethnic and racial backgrounds in graduate education. If your applying scholar is financially sponsored by another funding mechanism or program please contact me so we can ensure all documentations are collected to ensure a smooth financial transition.
The program is geared to introduce talented, potential Laney Graduate School Scholars to a vast skillset that includes:
  • Communicating research to a variety of audiences
  • Problem solving
  • Interpreting results
  • Participating in novel research
  • Navigating difficult ethical situations
  • Network building
  • Presenting their work (Symposium Style Capstone Experience)

Summer Research Opportunities Program for Undergraduates at UIC (Chicago) Heading link

The application deadline is February 7, 2020. There is no application fee.

Students receive an award of up to $4,000 to work with talented faculty at a Research I institution with state-of-the-art facilities. That experience includes instruction in research development which prepares students for the demands of graduate study. They also learn how to apply for admissions and financial support for graduate school. In addition, SROP students are offered opportunities to present their research projects twice during the summer calendar. Traditionally, sophomores and juniors from historically underrepresented ethnic minority groups who have a 3.75 (on a 5.0 scale) or 2.75 (on a 4.0 scale) or higher grade point average are invited to apply. Applicants must be U.S. citizens of permanent residents.

In addition to working one-on-one with a faculty member, scholars participate in the following programmatic components:

Campus-based educational enrichment activities designed to broaden the students’ view of graduate education and research;
Workshops that inform students about graduate admissions procedures, financial aid opportunities, and test-taking skills. Students also participate in training regarding the graduate application process.
Seminars conducted by faculty and graduate students that expose students to a wide range of fields of study and research instruction.
Informal social gatherings that provide a relaxed setting for students and faculty to exchange ideas and share experiences;
The Illinois Summer Research Symposium conference where scholars have the opportunity to introduce their research and meet with other students who are interested in academic careers. Sponsored by the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.
University of Illinois at Chicago sponsored final symposium for the formal presentation of scholars’ research projects.
Please note: Due to the 30-40 hour per week obligation to research activities, students who participate in SROP should view this program as a “full-time” experience. Holding additional internships, outside employment, or taking courses of any kind during SROP is strictly prohibited.

Program Dates & Application
